For me, it is a combination of two things:
1) I never expected EEG doesn't have a resident graphic designer that can't take on this (really simple) job
2) The exposure a "budding graphic designer" will get from designing this cover art is much much lower than the exposure of directing a music video. Especially for a Gin Lee song. Like, can I even put this on a CV? So what benefits are there really?
As an interactive experience, EEG probably asked for too much and oversold the idea of "official cover art".
Btw, why didn't they just use this?

1) Nowadays many design jobs are completed by independent contractors (i.e. designers get hired on a project by project basis), so it is possible that EEG might not have a resident designer for 單曲 cover art. Having said that I assume old school EEG probably has a design department with a group of designers who can do graphic design, web design, print design, publishing design, etc. In any case, whether they have a resident graphic designer is not the point, this is a gimmick competition to promote a new song to fans that has gone wrong.
EEG wants Gin to be more 貼地 and 親民, to be closer to her fans, and hopefully gaining more. Since Gin has joined EEG, she has forced herself to be more outgoing, more active on social media. She goes on KOL youtube channels, she even went on to JFFLIVE 音樂擂台 for heaven's sake. She has been trying to reinvent herself and failing so far. Fashion shoots, 突襲粉絲婚宴, vlogs, 護膚, 電器 ads 等等 have not helped her to build a new "Gin brand".
Gin's old motto @BMA & @UMG 低調做人 高調做音樂 was the wrong approach to be a pop singer and it led to many people thinking she is 娘, 老土, 無個性 & 無感情唱歌機器. It has been far too long and she is now in her mid-30s. Her 娘味 is too strong and she has attracted many haters throughout the years. Unfortunately, this silly gimmick competition for fans has turned into a PR crisis. EEG "forgot" to include the 6 x ipad pros prizes initially because they misjudged that only Gin fans would pay attention to the competition. No, haters were watching too and it provided them a great opportunity to attack Gin and EEG (totally EEG's fault).
2) This is an interactive experience targeting Gin fans (even though not many out there). No one is pointing a gun at "Professional/Budding Graphic Designers" and forcing them to participate. Like I said, some of these keyboard warriors are not even designers. They just wanted a chance to attack Gin and/or EEG. If the competition is simply for Gin fans, "professional/budding designers" and their "expectation for exposure" are irrelevant. EEG did not sell "exposure" as a potential benefit. Of course, no prize/prize money is stupid on EEG's part - this is HK !
Ironically, with all of these PR shenanigans, the chosen 6 designers WILL get quite a bit of unexpected exposure now It remains to be seen whether "告別煤氣燈 Goodbye Gaslighter" would be hit or a flop. A fan of Gin who is a designer with a winning design artwork would probably include it on their CV (most likely an online portfolio CV showing their body of artwork). A "professional/buddy designer" who is not a fan of Gin just wanted to win the ipad pro will probably NOT put their winning artwork on their CV.
3) I don't think EEG asked for too much design-wise for a competition, but I do agree that they oversold the idea of "official cover art", especially there was no prize/prize money when they forgot to mention the ipad pro prizes |
