Ghost Town DJ's' 1996 Hit 'My Boo' Reaches New Hot 100 High Thanks to Viral Dance Video

Twenty years after Ghost Town DJs scored a Billboard Hot 100 hit with “My Boo,” the hip-hop group returns to the chart powered by increased streaming and downloads. The source of its comeback stems from a viral meme called the running man challenge, soundtracked by "My Boo." The meme was initially sparked by videos shot by Kevin Vincent and Jeremiah Hall, two high school students from New Jersey.

“My Boo” re-enters the Hot 100 at No. 29, besting its previous peak of No. 31 -- achieved on the Oct. 12, 1996 chart. It concurrently returns to the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at No. 14, topping its original No. 18 peak (Aug. 24, 1996 chart).

The song sold 35,000 downloads in the U.S. in the week ending May 5, according to Nielsen Music (up 47 percent compared to the previous week). In turn, it debuts at No. 8 on the R&B Digital Songs chart. Domestic streams for the cut skyrocket to 12.3 million plays during the tracking week -- up 147 percent. Of the total streams, 80 percent come from YouTube, while 1.5 million Spotify plays also contribute toward the charts.

While athletes were first to adopt the craze, several user-generated clips posted in the last few weeks have amassed millions more streams, counting towards the song’s advancement on the charts. From police units to international airlines creating their own videos, the challenge has gone global.

The hugely popular talent show announced Ariana Grande, Sia and Zayn Malik will help send off the show's tenth season.

Grande will perform "Into You" (with Christina Aguilera) from her “Dangerous Woman” album, released Friday.

Just hours after Idina Menzel gave her support to the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign, a new hashtag started trending on Twitter: #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend.

Was it a different experience to work with her for The Fame and then Born This Way?
I met her before she got signed on a label. The experiences were different. Before, there was no pressure for her and she would do things without asking questions, we had lot of fun. Then after The Fame, she became famous and it was different. It was not easy in the studio. Always a lot of people around her, it became something else. I couldn't carry on the same way.

Your work on her last album was minimal.
"Gypsy" is an idea we started together but i was not pleased with the song. We never finished it together. She asked what we could do with this song and I told her that if she wanted to finish it, I'll give it to her. She finished the song with somebody else. I never heard the finished song.

You two make a great team. You completely changed the sound of pop in 2008. Now you recorded 8 new songs with Lady Gaga for her next album. How was the reunion?
Exactly. I don't know where she is mentally and musically today. We'll see what happens. We tried to recreate the magic together in the studio. I think we made fantastic songs but once again, she's very busy. Too bad.

Can you tell us more about these songs with Lady Gaga? Does it sound like your previous songs?
It is close to what we have done before, with some evolutions. You can tell it's her and me, absolutely (laughs)! If you hear them, you can tell it is us. At one point, one of them was going to be the first single. Then it was cancelled, I don't know what happened.

RedOne: I didn't like ARTPOP, LG5 details"

I didn't like 'ARTPOP'. I respect it as art, because it did what it was born from within, but it is not what we did together," he reveals. Both have returned to work for the forthcoming album of Lady Gaga. "We recorded about 8 songs, but I do not know their future because she is still looking for the exact direction of the record. Four of these songs are very powerful and one is a Grammy-worthy song, very special", he says confident.

Long ago, you worked with her on a song for Blackout but it never got released.
I do not consider to have worked with her. I sent my song to her authors. It was just an idea that never been taker forward. Although she recorded with her voice, the song remained a demo. For some reason, people have heard that I had worked with Britney but this is not the case. If I had to work with Britney, we would make big hits (laughs)!


Have you two ever met?
No. I can not believe it, I never met Britney Spears (laughs)!

There's still time to call her with her new album in the works.
Perhaps, I talked with her team that we should definitely do something together. I respect her a lot, I love her. We'll see, I do not know what that could give but I love her, I've always been a fan. That would be nice.

RedOne Interview (4)

How does it feel to be able to say you've launched the worldwide career of such a pop star?
I'm honoured. And happy it also arrived! (laughs) I'm serious, because no one really knows how something like that is going to happen. It's the same as anyone knowing they have something special. It's just about giving your all, doing what you love, accepting the obstacles and the sacrifices in your way. You can never predict! The rest is up to the good will of the world, of God...

Did you dream of such an international explosion?
Of course! It was a dream of mine, I told myself daily I wanted to find the next Madonna. I swear. It was my dream. And it came true.

But in the studio with Gaga back in the day, you had to know you were about to create global hits...
Ok! You see, in a sense yes, because you really believe what you're doing could become huge. But at the same time, you know that things don't always happen the way you wish they would. So you say "Ok, here we go, let's cross our fingers!" But of course when her people came into the studio to hear the songs they were like "My goodness, this is huge!" That was what we thought too, because we believed in what we were doing so much.

I have the impression that what happened between you and Lady Gaga, this musical and creative alchemy, doesn't often occur in every lifetime. Do you agree?
I can definitely agree that it doesn't occur often! (laughs) It's not something that happens all the time. I have lots of songs with other artists, but what happens with Gaga, it's really unique. I think it might happen again, though. Maybe... I believe it. But you can't know in advance... I'm working on several projects with artists where I think it might occur again. But it's not enough to just make some music. Other factors are important too. The stars must all be aligned.

You've worked on "The Fame" and "The Fame Monster", those are the fans' favorite albums.
And they're the best! I'm very proud of them.

She has a very interesting career right now...
Yes, it's true...

The whole world knows you're working with her on her new record.
We've done eight songs for her album. But I don't know if it's the direction she wants to go in. You know, other stuff comes in the path of big artists and they decide not to do this or that anymore.

In your view, is the music close to "The Fame"?
In fact, with our songs, what I tried to do was protect what the fans expect but also incorporate what she's after right now. It's a mix. So we'll have to wait and see... Anyway, I think she'll hit big, either with me or with other people. I wish her the best, no matter what she'll decide.

And so you don't always know if one of these eight songs will make the album, or all of them? I've seen she's been working with many people...
No, not at all. Nobody knows. I think even she doesn't know yet... Yeah, she's working with great people. She's trying to find just the right thing. We'll see if it works out!

Did you feel any pressure when you return to the studio after making such enormous hits like "Poker Face" or "Just Dance"?
I can't really say there was any pressure around us when we made these eight songs. Of course, there's a bit of fear with a case like this... But forgetting all that stuff is exactly the trick.

You tell yourself: "We made such crazy songs, I can't do any better?"
That's funny, I remember feeling just like that at the time. "Poker Face" had become so big. We'd done "LoveGame", "Just Dance" was number one. And when the idea came to do the reissue "The Fame Monster" many of friends told me "You're never gonna make something as big as "Poker Face"!" (laughs) I said: "I think I can, actually!" And we made "Bad Romance", and BOOM! It was even bigger.

因為歐美唱片公司有budget
唱片公司既A&R team 搵音樂制作團隊(songwriting camp) 為歌手寫歌(有哂曲詞)
就算最後唔用首歌，都一樣要俾錢呢啲音樂人 (計鐘/writing session 收錢)

但香港唔興呢一套
香港唱片公司收左歌(曲)，歌手決定會採用先會將首歌俾填詞人(詞)，再搞埋編曲推出

其實就應該留返勁做2nd single既同出碟一齊谷銷量

其實呢啲一線制作人會介懷都合理嘎
因為係絕大多數既情況下，首單係唱片公司投放最多資源宣傳既歌
所以多數都係賣得最好 (賣得多=制作人收得多royalties)

好似早一兩年Dr Luke's team 俾左<Break A Sweat> Demi Lovato
條件係佢必須用首歌黎做首單，但最後Demi 嗰邊唔肯 (用左Cool For The Summer)
於是Dr Luke 即時抽番起首歌，寧願俾左首歌Becky G 都唔俾佢用

近年亦都印證左首單太強勁對接落來既唔係件好事

(1) 專輯太賣得，令到冇乜人再買之後既單曲 (Adele)
(2) 一次過出哂MV，結果冇得再利用出MV 用黎谷Youtube Streaming (Beyonce)
(3) 前一首既單曲聲勢太強勁，即使唱片公司轉左二單，電台仍然死播首單，結果二單電台airplay 慘死 (Rihanna)
