U.S. Record Industry Sees Album Sales Sink to Historic Lows (Again) -- But People Are Listening More Than Ever

It's the worst year (so far) for music sales since the 1991 debut of SoundScan (now Nielsen Music). Album sales, including track-equivalent albums (TEA, whereby 10 track sales equal one album unit) are down 16.9 percent in the first half of this year. But sales figures no longer tell the whole story of the record business.

First, let's bottom-line those disappearing sales. Album units overall fell 13.6 percent, with 100.3 million total sales. The compact disc continued to crumble, losing 11.6 percent and moving 50 million. Digital album sales fell to 43.8 million, from 53.7 million in the first half of last year. Vinyl sales continued to move up and to the right, growing 11.4 percent, to 6.2 million. New album releases have been most affected by the continued contraction, falling 20.2 percent overall, to 44.1 million units. Catalog albums fell "just" 7.7 percent, to 56.2 million.

Track sales fall to 404.3 million units from 531.6 million units. Current track sales are leading the descent; songs released in the last 18 months saw sales fall nearly 40 percent. Catalog, again, saw a much smaller dip, down 6.4 percent to 236.6 million units.

Listeners streamed 208.9 billion songs (which translates to 139.2 million album units) between January and now (July 6), an increase of 58.7 percent. Of that 208.9 billion, 113.6 billion were audio-only, versus 95.3 billion video streams (defined as a music video view on YouTube, Vevo, Tidal and Apple Music -- of which the latter two contribute a very small piece). It's the first time audio has surpassed lower-paying video streams.

What's that all mean?

Billboard estimates total U.S. revenue at $1.98 billion so far this year, versus $1.82 billion last year, an corresponding 8.9 percent increase. However, the rate that Billboard uses to estimate the revenue generated by streaming ($0.0063 per song), which is clearly a central part of the revenue estimate, has been disputed as too high by some indie labels.

而家個Billboard流行榜問題係streaming 佔分太多而且好難做到每一個用戶剩係計算一次
以前買單曲/大碟只係一次性
但而家一個用戶可以stream同一首歌無限次
變相大紅嗰批歌手容易長期霸哂streaming榜高位
結果個榜就長期俾同一堆人塞住左

至於Billboard大碟榜重有另一個問題
佢唔係計算購買/串流播放整張專輯既次數
而係將大碟放錄既所有歌總購買/串流播放數直接除10 當作大碟銷量
變相係雙重計算左單曲銷量, 有一兩首大熱單曲既(年輕)歌手就好着數
(英國大碟榜 都用類似既計算方法, 不過佢會唔計大碟入面最高播放次數既兩首歌, 相對上公平少少)

總之而家個計法就係好唔公平

Jessie J leaves The Voice Australia



She was one of pop's biggest names for a few fleeting moments several years ago, but these days she's better known as a professional TV talent show judge. However, now Jessie J is set to say goodbye to her lucrative gig at The Voice Australia after two successful seasons to focus on her fledgling pop career instead. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the 28-year-old explained that it was time for her to 'get back to the music' after realizing that it had already been two years since her last hit, Bang Bang, was released.

The former bisexual did two seasons on The Voice UK from 2012 to 2013, before joining the Australian version of the reality TV series last year for two seasons.

While it's unclear just how much she was paid for the Channel Nine series, she reportedly pocketed $420,000 AUD per season for the UK version, and would've likely banked a similar fee Down Under. The British singer's last sizable pop hit was 2014's Bang Bang, although the majority of the track's popularity was down to its A-list co-artists, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande.

Jessie's record sales have noticeably declined with each release since her debut album, Who You Are, was released to great success in 2011. Following her decision not to return to The Voice Australia, Jessie took to her Sydney kitchen to belt out some of her old hits whilst cooking dinner for her friends. Makeup-free and dressed in a tracksuit, the down-to-earth songstress delivered a rendition of her best known single, Price Tag, proving that she has yet to grow tired of the song after all these years.

After nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Drake’s Views is dethroned from the top slot by Blink-182’s new set, California. The latter debuts at No. 1 with 186,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 7, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 172,000 were in traditional album sales -- the third-largest sales week for a rock album in 2016.

In the runner-up slot on the new Billboard 200, Drake’s Views slips from No. 1 to No. 2 with 117,000 units (up 6 percent). The album spent its first nine weeks atop the list -- the third-most weeks at No. 1 for a hip-hop album in the chart’s history. Ahead of Views are Vanilla Ice’s To the Extreme (16 weeks at No. 1 in 1990 and 1991) and M.C. Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em (21 weeks in 1990).

Maxwell’s new blackSUMMERS’night arrives at No. 3 with 59,000 units (57,000 in pure album sales). It’s the follow-up to the 2009 album BLACKsummers’night, which debuted at No. 1 with 316,000 copies sold. Before that, he released the 2001 album Now, which launched at No. 1 with 296,000.
